Claire Murray in her studio in Ashreigney, North Devon, UK

Claire Murray is a figurative ceramicist. Her work is currently based around the complexities of human communication. Claire has worked with clay since her early 20's both as a student and during her career as a teacher. She now devotes her time fully to the development of her own work. Claire was chosen to become a Selected Member of the Craft Potters Association (CPA) in 2002. She is also a member of the Devon Artists Network, North Devon Arts and the Westcountry Potters Association.

All pieces are individually hand modelled and built using a mixture of slab, coiling and 'pinching' techniques. My work is initially fired to 1180°C. This is followed by the application on the figure of decorations of metal oxides, under-glaze colours and crayons. The figure is normally finished with an earthenware transparent glaze. A second firing is then completed to a temperature of 1040°C. Decals may also be applied. These are fired to 800°C. A finished figure may have been fired three or four times.
